Some thoughts..
The 'leak' in the NYT about certain 'missing' Pakistani military officers. These were said to be the ones who helped in the decimation of OBL.
Much is being said of the issue, and each word upon word presents a dangerous situation. If I may look at it simply, General Kayani's staying on at the helm has become important. At the same time, the feeling of frustration among other top generals in the Pakistani Armed forces builds up to critical levels. In a normal army situation, one would have loved to see the system collapse into itself. But Pakistan is a Nuclear powered country (read force) and its arsenal is bigger than swollen local egos. In a destabilized state, this could present a precipice of no return.
Engaging the Pakistani army all over again should be the US' primary objective. It will be in the Indian interest as well. A known devil is the better devil. The political machinery in Pakistan is impotent and Kayani's existence can only be assured through direct US interference. International diplomacy has little room for red faces beyond a few hours, so the re-engagement would be necessary.
It is necessary to keep an eye on another destabilizing agent, a giant of an economy called China. It has had a soft corner for Pakistan (possibly for mineral wealth on the Afghan border) and has been arming the Pak forces. China is irresponsible in aggressive marketing of wares, and cannot differentiate between battle-ware and Tupperware.
The new Indian policy, of course would have to less sage-like (read Manmohan) and more pro-active. If Manmohan's biggest personal victory has been the Nuclear Treaty-hen, well, that has laid a boiled egg after the Japanese fiasco. Manmohan will have to realize that he is in politics and stop behaving like an impotent sage, or get out of politics. India needs some positive thinking and positive action.
This is a very crucial point in history for this region of the world. We will all have to tread with care.
